Change is inevitable in our fast-moving electronic age. As 2012 changes to 2013, VSS is making significant changes to its structure, approach and presentation of courses. The main rationale is accessibility and affordability of visual arts courses to all South Africans. Photography in particular, is a powerful medium in the advertising, documentation and events (particularly weddings) arenas, and provides a much needed extra income for many people.
That education is a prerequisite for economic growth and development is beyond reproach. However, South Africa is a vast country in which tertiary education centres, particularly in the arts, are sparsely scattered and are found only in major economic hubs, such as Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. The reality is that further education is beyond the means of a great majority of South Africans.
The cost associated to accessing education centers, by physically going to major cities, is perhaps the key obstacle to education for most. By not only offering residential courses on campus, but also distance education programs in the visual arts sector, Visual Skills School endeavors to bring visual arts education to the people, rather than expect the people to come to education. By so doing Visual Skills School aims at contributing to give effect to everyone's Constitutional right to “further education” (Article 29(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996).

You don’t make a photograph with a camera.
You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen,
the books you have read, the music you have heard,
the people you have loved.
